Bitcoin is its own Network statusto borrow a term from Balaji Srinivasan. That is, while Bitcoin proponents are not tied to a single geographic region (quite the opposite, in fact), they have collective power and can create change.

We have just seen a version of this power exercised in the US political sphere, where the Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency) lobby strongly supported pro-Bitcoin candidates in the recent US election cycle. Because this lobby was so powerful, many pro-Bitcoin candidates were elected or re-elected to positions of power.

One can do that He argues That Trump won the election because he embraced Bitcoin, while Harris appears to have only been able to muster the ability to make lukewarm and off-color statements about being pro-crypto (statements that some at Bitcoin Magazine found inauthentic and even offensive).

Now, there’s another opportunity for the Bitcoin community to rally behind a candidate. For the first time in history, a country has a presidential candidate running on the idea of putting his country on the Bitcoin standard. That country is Suriname and that candidate is Maya Barbeau.

Barbeau recognizes the transformative power of Bitcoin, and believes that making it a legal tender could help lift Suriname’s 600,000 citizens out of “survival mode,” as she puts it.

So, my question to you as a Bitcoin enthusiast is: Do you want to watch Barbeau try to make history or do you want to play a role in helping her make it?

In other words, you will Contribute to her campaign – Bitcoin also allows you to do this from anywhere in the world without permission – or will you be a spectator?

You can also contact the Parbhoe Campaign via info@bitcoinsranan.com to offer support in other ways if you feel like it.

The election will be held in May 2025, and Barbot and her team are currently preparing for the campaign season (including obtaining necessary campaign funds). It’s hard to say yet how much chance she has of winning, but her chance is likely to be less without your support.

So, if you would like to see the state of the Bitcoin network include another nation state, you have the opportunity here to play a role in making that happen.

(Author’s Note: Please keep in mind that this piece is not necessarily an endorsement of Barbot but a call to action for those who support her.)
