Rebellion wallet, the first self-custody Lightning wallet to run on the web, has officially launched open beta. According to the release announcementThe wallet aims to solve the onboarding challenge of Bitcoin users around the world by providing access regardless of location or device. The ad described the wallet’s mission to provide services to the five billion global internet users with web browser access by providing complete control over funds and eliminating the need for identity verification. In addition, the wallet aims to offer unique features that have been restricted by the strict App Store requirements in other Bitcoin wallets.
The first distinct feature of Mutiny Wallet is its integration with Lightning, a Layer 2 scaling solution built on top of Bitcoin. The wallet takes advantage of the Block’s Lightning Development Kit (LDK) project, allowing developers to customize various aspects of the Lightning stack. To make it easier to manage user liquidity, Mutiny Wallet has partnered with Voltage and Flow 2.0 producer, allowing new users to receive their first Lightning payment within seconds of opening the app.
Furthermore, Mutiny Wallet introduced separate balances for Lightning Channel funds and on-chain spending, with the goal of unified balances in the future. The wallet also emphasizes the importance of backups and offers encrypted and remote storage for Lightning-related data recovery. Users are encouraged to provide feedback during the open beta phase, with the announcement stating that the team is dedicated to addressing bugs and quickly implementing new features.
Mutiny Wallet also provides support for Nostr wallet connections, which is a heart feature of Nostr, a protocol that enables decentralized social media. In addition, Mutiny also intends to introduce subscriptions, offering a withdrawal-based subscription feature built on Nostr Wallet Connect. They provide an example of this in their own subscription, Mutiny+. While Mutiny+ currently provides limited perks as per the announcement, additional paid features are only planned for the future.
Despite the advance of the wallet, some caution is advised due to potential issues, such as payment reliability and force shutdowns on Lightning channels. The team acknowledged the complexity of Lightning and urged users to avoid uploading large amounts of money during the beta phase.
