What Does Bitcoin Mean to You? An Interview with Marco Santini

6

In a collaboration that brings together the worlds of art and Bitcoin, Marco Santini – a renowned artist – recently lent his creativity to Bitcoin Magazine and the Bitcoin Conference. His involvement began with a piece created with the first issue of Bitcoin Magazine, Spotlight: Bitcoin Magazine Issue 1 (be seen here), which was purchased privately by Emily Bailey at Sotheby’s and is now proudly housed at the Bitcoin Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. This iconic piece features key elements that encapsulate Bitcoin’s pivotal moments in history from the magazine itself.

At the Bitcoin 2024 conference, Santini went even further by creating a live mural and collaborative activation. The vibrant piece, now also on display at the Bitcoin Museum, aims to embody the diverse voices of attendees who answered the profound question: “What does Bitcoin mean to you?” A notable response came from BTC Inc. CEO David Bailey, who mused, “You know, there are a lot of things, cliché things like ‘hope,’ but I would say ‘thriving.’ Because Bitcoin, beyond hope, you need all the things that Bitcoin brings to give your life… fulfillment beyond just the financial component of it. If you’re filled with hope and potential, and excited about the future, you’re going to thrive.”

Tony Sakic had the opportunity to interview Santini and delve into his conference experience and the essence of his mural:

Tony: Okay, so have you been doing this all day? How do you react to everyone who says things to you and comes up and asks you to write lyrics? What was your experience at the conference?

Marco: Sure. My name is Marco Santini. I’m an impact artist. I travel the world and I like to say that I reflect the spirit of communities through collaborative, interactive art. This weekend here at the Bitcoin Conference, I asked people, “What does Bitcoin mean to you?” Without judgment, without fear, listening to everyone, from all different walks of life, and trying to understand what they really think.

We got over 250 unique responses that I have compiled here in this mural. It’s really colorful and has positive messages. I think surrounding yourself with bright colors and lots of messages can help improve your mental health, make you feel better, and connect you to the community in general.

Tony: What are some interesting findings from the responses you received?

Marco: Specifically, there were some interesting findings. The most common response was “freedom.” Many people talked about being able to own their own money, not having a middleman, and maybe fear or distrust of the banking system. The second biggest theme was the idea of community, where people feel like they’re part of a family, their friends are here. They interact with each other and look forward to seeing each other in person. It was really interesting to hear how people connect, find friends, and meet people here. Even though they’re all decked out in Bitcoin logos from head to toe, when I asked them, “What does Bitcoin mean?” they stopped and really thought about it, which often led to deep and meaningful conversations.

Tony: This looks great. Can I add anything else?

Marco: What is it for you word?

Tony: P2P, peer to peer. Because Bitcoin is for the people and it is a way for anyone to make transactions whenever they want freely. It does not need anyone’s permission to send anything. It is all about community and trust in the person you are dealing with.

Santini’s mural is more than just a collection of words, it’s a living tapestry that embodies the hopes, dreams, and realities of the Bitcoin community. The artwork reflects the spirit of decentralization that Bitcoin embraces, emphasizing freedom, community, and peer-to-peer interaction.

Santini added words to the mural as attendees answered the question, “What does Bitcoin mean to you?”

David Bailey’s contribution to the mural, which highlights “prosperity,” has resonated deeply within the Bitcoin community. His perspective underscores the multifaceted nature of Bitcoin as not only a financial instrument but also a beacon of hope and a catalyst for personal and societal growth.

Santini’s art continues to inspire and connect people, reflecting the growing and evolving spirit of the Bitcoin community. The mural, now part of the Bitcoin Museum, stands as a testament to the power of collaborative art and the profound impact Bitcoin has had on people’s lives. Visitors to the museum can witness firsthand colorful expressions of what Bitcoin means to people from all walks of life, providing a unique and enriching experience that goes beyond traditional exhibitions.
