AG slams gov’t for seeking to be above the law

2

The Israeli Council of Ministers unanimously approved a vote without confidence in the public prosecutor, Jali Bahrav Mayra, who did not attend the meeting and said that the government is seeking to be above the law. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was absent and led by the Council of Ministers and Minister of Justice Yarif Levin.

Levin opened the meeting by saying: “I look at the absence of the public prosecutor from the meeting as a very dangerous issue. This is additional evidence of the depth of the contempt that she houses on the cabinet and its members, and that it has no responses to the allegations that it made against it.”

Levin announced that he is planning to “approach the General Professional Committee chaired by retired Supreme Court, Ashir Garrs, in order to hold consultations on the end of the prosecutor's office, and upon receiving its conclusions, to submit a proposal on this issue to the Council of Ministers.”

Levin said, “The harsh words that all ministers speak at the meeting and the full support of the cabinet ministers for lack of confidence in the public prosecutor are an event in a precedent position indicating the depth of the rift between the public prosecutor and its transcendence and the council that caused its relations with the government. It is not a way to restore the relationship of confidence that no longer exists.”

There was a huge demonstration today in the Jerusalem government area against the measures taken by the government against Baharrav Mayra.

Baharav Mayra sent a message this morning to the cabinet ministers who attack the reasons for their decision to overthrow it. She wrote, “According to the proposed movement, the public prosecutor who is committed to the limits of the law will be considered a person who does not cooperate with the government, and can be rejected. In fact, the proposed decision seeks to make the government a translator of the law, which determines the law and its limits to itself.”

She added: “The proposal does not seek to enhance confidence, but loyalty to the political institute is not the ruling, but the governmental authority is without limits, as part of a broader step to weaken the judiciary and deter all professional officials. The government seeks to be higher than the law and act without checks and balances, even during the most sensitive periods – a state of emergency, protests, protests, and during the election period.”

Opposition leader MK Yair Lapid (Yes ATID) said Netanyahu wanted to launch his pure.
