Every provider has different policies, and unless you’re fiercely loyal to one airline and one airline only, racking up the miles needed to earn enough credits for your next big vacation to Hawaii or Aspen can be a long and arduous process.
The American Airlines rewards system is complex
Perhaps one of the most confusing rewards programs is American Airlines (AAL) – Get a free report. This Fort Worth, Texas, company routinely changes its rewards program and offers several levels, which can confuse even the most savvy traveler.
In 2022, American introduced its loyalty points program, which replaced previous programs such as eligible elite miles, elite qualifying dollars, and eligible elite segments. Loyalty points allowed flyers to earn points whenever they flew with American, used an AAdvantage co-branded credit card for purchases, or shopped with AAdvantage partners.
Later in the fall, it introduced the Instant Status Pass, which offers a series of “status challenges.” The higher your status, the more bonuses you get, which can then be exchanged for free flights and other perks.
If it sounds complicated, that’s because it is. This may be partly why America has simplified its challenges by allowing customers to buy their way to higher status.
According to new reports, American is sending emails to members without status and offering them the chance to buy Gold or Platinum status right through March 2024. This is even if the customer has not traveled with the carrier in years.
