the AirTag It itself is a small circular tracker made of plastic and stainless steel with a great deal of technology inside a compact body. There’s a user-replaceable battery, a very loud speaker, an ultra-wideband U1 chip, and Bluetooth along with some other sensors. All of this works together to enable you to show a location on a map and to enable you to ping.
Once you pull out the tab on the back to adjust the battery, simply hold the AirTag near your iPhone and follow the instructions on the splash screen that will appear. You’ll name your AirTag and even choose an icon for it, sync it with your iCloud account, and even set up a few things to find if you lose it.
Unlike some other item trackers, like the Tile, the AirTag connects to Apple’s FindMy network which pretty much has coverage anywhere. It’s the same device that lets you find your iPhone on a map or ping it when necessary and has countless devices like Macs, iPads, Apple Watch, and AirPods that support it. All the site is encrypted and it is not stored either.
Once in AirTag Set up, you can use the FindMy app to see its location, ping it, and with a more recent iPhone, you can use Precise Find. If you’re like me and you’ve lost your keys with an AirTag on them, you can have your iPhone provide step-by-step instructions when you’re nearby to help you find it. You can even ask Siri to ping your AirTag by its name on your iPhone or HomePod to find its location.
