Apple’s Maryland store workers vote to authorize strike By Reuters

(Reuters) – Workers at an Apple (NASDAQ:) store in Towson, Maryland, voted to allow a strike, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (AIM) said in a statement late on Saturday.

A layoff date has not yet been set, according to the union that represents Apple retail store workers in Maryland.

“Issues at the forefront of this action include concerns about work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices that disrupt personal lives, and the failure of wages to align with the cost of living in the area,” IAM said in the statement.

An Apple spokeswoman said: “We will treat the union that represents our team in Tucson with respect and in good faith.”

In June 2022, Apple workers in Maryland voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, becoming the tech giant's first retail employees to unionize in the United States.

Meanwhile, workers at an Apple Store in Short Hills, New Jersey, voted against joining a union, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA), who filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging Apple illegally union busted at the New Jersey store and others, blamed the defeat on the company's conduct, the report said.

Retail employees at an Apple store in New Jersey filed for union representation with the Communications Workers of America on April 8, according to John Nagy, operations leader at the Short Hills store and a member of the organizing committee.

Apple did not respond to requests for comment on the anti-union vote. The CWA and NLRB did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Bloomberg's report on the New Jersey workers' vote.
