Turkish central bank boosts policy rate by 5 pp after hot inflation prints
The Bank of England kept its bank rate unchanged at 5.25%, in a five-to-four vote on Thursday. Four members of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee favored a 25 basis point increase to 5.5%.
Car sales in Thailand shrank 11.25% from a year earlier to 60,535 units in August 2023, following an 8.77% fall in the previous month.
The annual inflation rate in Malaysia stood at 2% in August 2023, unchanged from July’s 23-month low figure, in line with market forecasts.
In the U.S. on Thursday, all three major indexes edged lower. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was the worst performer among the major averages, retreating 1.82% to 13,223.98 points. The benchmark S&P 500 slipped 1.64% to 4,329.99 points, notching its worst day since March 22. The blue-chip Dow declined 1.07% to 34,070.68 points.

WTI crude futures rose above $90 per barrel on Friday, hovering close to ten-month highs amid concerns that a Russian ban on fuel exports could tighten global oil supply further.
Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,923.29 per ounce by 0350 GMT, having logged its biggest daily drop since Sept. 5 on Thursday. U.S. gold futures also rose 0.2% to $1,943.10. Spot silver rose 0.4% to $23.47 per ounce, set for its best week in four. Platinum gained 0.7% to $925.77 and palladium jumped 0.8% to $1,272.85.
