Bangladesh chief justice, central bank chief quit amid protests, officials say By Reuters

DHAKA (Reuters) – Bangladesh’s chief justice and central bank governor have resigned, officials said on Saturday, as student protests that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee widen to target more officials appointed under her rule.

A justice ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Supreme Court Chief Justice Obaid al-Hassan resigned after students warned him of “serious consequences” if he did not do so. Reuters could not immediately reach Hassan.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdul Rauf Talukder also resigned but his resignation was not accepted given the importance of the position, Finance Ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters. Reuters was unable to reach Talukder.

A few days ago, between 300 and 400 bank officials forced four conservative MPs to resign on corruption charges.

Hasina has been in New Delhi since Monday following an uprising that killed about 300 people, many of them students, ending her 15-year rule in the South Asian nation of 170 million people.
