BMW (OTC) revealed its new 2024 BMW i5 during its world premiere on Wednesday after weeks of glimpses of the first all-electric 5 Series.

As a combustion model, the 5 Series has been prominent in the company’s lineup since 1972, and remains the German automaker’s second best-selling vehicle after the 3 Series. It’s been known for some time that BMW has been actively developing an all-electric version of the 5 Series, along with plug-in hybrid and conventional combustion engine options.

With its unmistakable resemblance to the 5 Series, the i5 confidently embraces the timeless three-box design, characterized by a long bonnet and Hofmeister shape. It effortlessly displays a contemporary interpretation of BMW’s iconic twin headlights and kidney grille, adding a touch of modern flair to its overall aesthetic.

According to BMW, the i5 offers an equivalent amount of interior space to its ICE counterparts in the 5 Series, thanks to the placement of the low-level battery at the bottom of the chassis. There is a slight difference in trunk capacity, however, as the i5 offers 17.3 cubic feet compared to the 18.4 cubic feet found in conventional models.

At launch, BMW will offer two fully electric variants of the i5. Potential buyers can opt for the single-engined, rear-wheel drive i5 eDrive40 or plunge into the high-performance M60 xDrive model, which is positioned as the flagship of the entire 5 Series lineup.

Both types are powered by a high-voltage battery with a usable capacity of 84.3 kWh.

The battery enables a driving range of 295 miles for the i5 eDrive40 on 19-inch wheels or 256 miles for the i5 M60 xDrive. Range ratings are estimated by BMW based on EPA testing procedures standards.

A standout new feature on the upcoming electric i5 is the optional BMW Driving Assistance package, which includes Highway Assist. With this feature, i5 drivers can go hands-free and let the car drive at speeds of up to 85 mph, as long as they keep their eyes on the road and conditions permit.

The all-new i5 electric models will be built at Plant Dingolfing, BMW’s largest plant in Europe. The global market launch will begin in October 2023 with the all-electric versions and will be followed by the plug-in hybrid variants in the US in 2024.
