Chinese Foreign Minister Chen met with US Ambassador to China Burns.
Comments from Chen were reported in state media controlled by the Chinese Communist Party:
-
It is necessary to stabilize Sino-US relations, avoid a downward spiral and prevent incidents between China and the United States.
- The US side should correct its understanding of China, and return to rationality
- The United States must properly handle the Taiwan issue, and stop continuing to empty the one-China principle
- The United States must respect China’s basic line and red line, and stop harming China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.
Well, that doesn’t sound very conciliatory. They spoke at least.
China and the United States operate under fundamentally different systems. The authoritarian state of China supports other totalitarian states, such as Russia in its brutal invasion of Ukraine.
On the other hand, the United States supports the people’s rights to self-determination, thus building its continued relationship with Taiwan.
The best we can hope for is a confrontation between China and the United States, I think.
