Delay to Nvidia’s new AI chip could affect Microsoft, Google, Meta, the Information says By Reuters

(Reuters) – Design flaws could delay the launch of chip giant Nvidia Corp’s upcoming artificial intelligence chips by three months or more, technology publication The Information reported on Friday.

The setback could affect customers such as Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: ), Alphabet Inc.’s Google (NASDAQ: ) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: ), which have collectively ordered chips worth tens of billions of dollars, the company said, citing people who help produce chips and server hardware for Nvidia.

The AI chip company unveiled its Blackwell series of chips in March, following its previous flagship AI chip, the Grace Hopper Superchip, which is designed to accelerate generative AI applications.

“As we have previously stated, demand for Hopper is very strong, and extensive sampling has begun at Blackwell, with production scheduled to ramp up in the second half of the year,” an Nvidia spokesperson said in an emailed statement in response to the report.

Microsoft said it had nothing to add, while Meta and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nvidia Corp. informed Microsoft Corp. and another major cloud provider this week of a delay in production of its most advanced artificial intelligence chip in the Blackwell series, The Information reported, citing a Microsoft employee and another person familiar with the matter.
