Elon Musk Ramps Up Twitter AI Project Plans with Purchase of New GPUs

The move comes as a surprise, considering Musk has recently been at the forefront of another movement that has raised concerns about the development of artificial intelligence.

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has reportedly made some new purchases in line with Twitter’s artificial intelligence project. According to Business Insider a report, Musk is moving forward with his plans to create an artificial intelligence infrastructure for Twitter and has purchased approximately 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) for the purpose. Interestingly, however, the move came as a surprise, considering that Musk has recently been at the forefront of another movement that has raised concerns about the development of artificial intelligence in general.

Despite this, sources familiar with the company confirmed the purchase. But they also think there seems to be some kind of urgency to the project. While they admit it’s still in its infancy, large purchases like this often indicate Musk is fully “committed” to the project, the sources said.

Does Elon Musk suffer from a dilemma in artificial intelligence?

Remember, on March 18th, Musk revealed his plans to use artificial intelligence to detect manipulative acts on Twitter. the tweet Partially read:

“In the coming months, we will use artificial intelligence to detect and highlight the manipulation of public opinion on this platform.”

However, Musk has since signed an open letter calling for a halt to AI for now. At the time, he shared with thousands of other technical researchers the view that AI technology poses dangers to humanity.

Elon Musk is also on record for calling on regulators to act quickly before it’s too late to keep AI research in check. This was at the 2017 event he attended with the United States National Referees Association.

Despite Musk’s reservations about the technology, Twitter under his watch has continued to hire experts in the field of artificial intelligence. For example, former DeepMind engineers Igor Babushkin and Manuel Kroes jumped ship to join Musk’s team in March. And it may be worth noting that DeepMind is the artificial intelligence research arm of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

From all indications, Musk may be interested in AI the most. And with an additional 10,000 GPUs to use on the platform, it may have dealt with any potential computational power issues required by large-scale AI models.
