(Reuters) – Elon Musk said on Sunday he was looking forward to changing Twitter’s logo, tweeting: “And soon we’ll be showing goodbye to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the sparrows.”
In a post on the site at 12:06 AM ET (0406 GMT), the billionaire owner of the social media platform added: “If the X logo goes live enough tonight, we’ll make it go viral all over the world tomorrow.”
Musk posted an image of a wobbly “X”, and later in an audio chat on Twitter Spaces responded “yes” when asked if the Twitter logo would change, adding that it “should have done a long time ago”.
Under Musk’s tumultuous period since he bought Twitter in October, the company changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire’s vision of creating a “super app” like China’s WeChat.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Twitter’s website says its logo, which depicts a blue bird, is “our most distinctive asset.” “That’s why we are so protective of her,” she added.
The bird was temporarily replaced in April by a dog, which helped increase the market value of the meme coin.
The company drew widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced early this month that Twitter would limit the number of tweets different accounts could read per day.
Daily limits helped grow threads on competing Meta-owned service, which surpassed 100 million subscriptions within five days of launch.
The latest complication for Twitter was a lawsuit filed on Tuesday alleging the company owes at least $500 million in severance pay to former employees. Since being acquired by Musk, the company has laid off more than half of its workforce to cut costs.
