Vitalik Buterin is likely to provide financial backing to ethOS, a project that has been touted as the world’s first Ethereum-based mobile operating system.
According to Arkham data, Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin sender 199.9 ETH, worth over $517,000, for a multi-signature contract from Gnosis Safe. The leading speculation is that Buterin’s transfer was a donation to an Ethereum phone project called ethOS.
Built by anonymous developers at Freedom Factory, this open-source initiative was initially released on select Android devices in late 2022 and re-released the following year.
ethOS is a native Ethereum-based mobile operating system that allows users to write blockchain code and deploy decentralized applications based on ETH. The team, which was formed in 2021, plans to release additional hardware offerings this year or next, according to the official ethOS website.
Is Ethereum ethOS the Answer to Solana Saga?
Fifteen years after the emergence of Bitcoin (BTC), the blockchain industry is focused on achieving mass adoption by providing easy access to Web3 and real-world utilities.
Integrating blockchain standards with mobile devices like smartphones has often been a challenge, but developments in recent years indicate progress is being made.
In June 2022, Solana Labs, the entity behind Solana (SOL), introduced the Saga mobile device. The devices are built on top of the Android operating system and come preloaded with Solana decentralized applications like the Phantom Wallet.
Initially slow sales raised doubts about Saga’s success, and it took Solana nearly a year to sell 20,000 units. However, Saga 2.0 improved on that record, selling 100,000 units in pre-orders within a month.
At the time of publication, Saga appeared to be ahead of ethOS, although the two projects have taken different approaches to integrating blockchain and mobile. The Ethereum and Solana blockchains have both seen significant growth in the past year. If both ethOS and Saga continue to evolve, they could eventually become full-fledged competitors in the mobile blockchain market.
