Google Floats Blockchain-based Content Policy to Bolster User Safety

According to the company’s projection, apps and games that comply with this policy will begin rolling out later this summer.

As part of its efforts to support blockchain-based content on its Play Store, tech giant Google has been set Subtract new policy. Content such as NFTs and other blockchain-based apps must comply with the new policy if their content is to remain on the Play Store. According to the company, it seeks to use a “Blockchain-based Content Policy” to ensure the safety of its users. Google says that in no way does it intend to stifle innovation even though user protection is still of paramount importance to it. Part of the statement is as follows:

“We’re excited to see creative in-app experiences flourish and help developers expand their businesses.”

Google explains a new policy

Google says that blockchain-based content, according to this policy, refers to “tokenized digital assets secured on the blockchain.” Under its terms, developers must determine whether their app or game “sells or enables users to earn tokenized digital assets,” such as NFTs. According to a statement, developers will be able to make the announcement through the “Monetary Features Announcement Form on the App Content Page” in the Play Console. More importantly, “Developers may not promote or highlight any potential gains from gameplay or trading activities.”

The policy also covers NFT Gamification where players may not use purchased NFTs in-game for real cash value. This includes other NFTs. Instead, it suggests that NFTs that users purchase in-game be used in-game to improve those users’ experience or help them advance their cause in the game.

Google also shared possible scenarios where developers may violate the policy, either intentionally or unintentionally. The company says a developer would be violating the policy if it creates apps that sell bundles of NFTs without disclosing the exact contents and values of the NFTs.

Additionally, social pay-to-play casino games that reward NFTs do not comply with the new policy, Google says.

According to the company’s projection, apps and games that comply with this policy will begin rolling out later this summer. However, the rollout will only feature a select few developers in the initial trial-testing phase. A wider range launch will then be available at the end of the year.
