Google Israel hiring dozens of engineers to develop AI chip

Google expands the development of chips in Israel, and it has learned “Globes”, and is currently employing dozens of employees to develop a new type of communication chips – network interface card (NIC), a basic component of use in communications between basic processors and graphics processors to process artificial intelligence. These chips are currently produced by Broadcom, Intel and Nvidia.

An expensive commodity at a high price

Until recently, Google's development of a clear important network card was, but the spread of artificial intelligence processing made the component decisive between graphics processors in large data centers. Its price has increased, and “NIC” has become a valuable commodity, which was sold at special prices in particular by NVIDIA as part of a group of communications chips developed in Mellanox, the Israeli company that NVIDIA acquired five years ago. NVIDIA is trying to market its components NIC along with other communications components in a reduced package deal, but prices still make it difficult for technology giants to spread artificial intelligence technologies.

Four years ago, Google opened its chips development department to develop the components of devices that would reduce their dependence on external suppliers such as Intel, NVIDIA and Broadcom.

Technology giants are now rushing to develop NICS after Openai has released, for example, specifications for developing a segment that can deal with the tasks of processing for the next generation of the language model processing. Thus, companies such as NVIDIA, Google and Amazon are competing to develop new NIC processors internally. Google has previously developed a NIC processor called Tin, but now it needs to be adapted to the component with an era in which the largest part of the processing tasks deals with large language models.

Israelis behind the slide

Google develops its own chips for several years with the help of Broadcom, but these efforts focused mainly on the essence of the graphics accelerator, in order to reduce dependence on NVIDIA and AMD graphics processors. Google TPU graphics are called, Google has been used for several years for wide interior functions such as images, language processing applications and AI. Google also purchases graphics processors from NVIDIA to Intel, but internal development efforts have increased to reduce dependence on external processors and increase their ability to adapt their devices to the requirements of their cloud customers.







Amazon took a similar step a decade ago when it acquired Annapurna Labs, an Israeli company based in Haifa, for $ 370 million, after NIC's development. Amazon has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the development of additional chips based on the activities of Annapurna, and today it includes a GRAVITON processor, a TRINUM Training processor and a processor of artificial intelligence conclusion (infernasia). Google's development activity is believed to be smaller than Nafidia, and is managed, among others, by two Israelis: Uri Frank, former Vice President in Intel; And Guy Azrad, former CEO of Marville Israel.

Google Job Job also contains dozens of jobs in the field of central processing units (central processing units), and processors used to manage tasks in servers and data centers, which are usually sold in industry by companies such as Intel and NVIDIA.

Google has 140 electric engineers and software in Haifa and Tel Aviv, according to LinkedIn, and they are now appointing dozens of new engineers to develop the chip.
