Goolsbee and Kashkari: In a wait-and-see mode.

Minneapolis Fed President. Kashkari:

  • He is cautious about how restrictive monetary policy is
  • The business community does not believe that financial conditions are tight.
  • I'm in wait and see mode
  • An increase in interest rates cannot be ruled out
  • We have seen gains on the supply side of the economy leading to lower inflation in the past year. I don't know this year if we'll see more.
  • Is there an argument that the neutral rate has risen?
  • I'm not sure where the neutral rate is now. That's why we have a wait-and-see mode.
  • The default is that we will sit and wait for a long period of time
  • The bar is high for another rate hike but it cannot be ruled out

President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Goolsby

  • We have cross-streams coming through the data
  • Housing price inflation is at the forefront of my concerns
  • See some bumps in the road to inflation
  • Nothing is ever “off the table.”
  • Housing inflation remains well above the pre-Covid period. If inflation is to fall, it must fall.
