Histadrut calls general strike for Monday over hostage deal

Histadrut Chairman Arnon Bar-David: I came to the conclusion after speaking with the heads of the security services that the deal is not moving forward due to political considerations.

The head of the General Federation of Labor Unions in Israel, Arnon Bar-David, announced a general strike starting at 6 a.m. today, Monday, in cooperation with the families of prisoners held in Gaza. All flights departing and arriving at Ben Gurion Airport will also be halted starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

“I came out of a very tense and difficult meeting with representatives of the hostages’ families, which reflected everything we have been through here in 11 months,” Bar-David said. “It is no longer possible to stand by while Jews are being murdered in the tunnels in Gaza. This is unacceptable. I came to the conclusion after speaking with the heads of the security forces that the deal is not advancing due to political considerations. This is unacceptable. We must stop abandoning hostages and displaced persons while the economy collapses. I am a soldier in the State of Israel and I must restore it to a normal, rational state.”

The teachers’ union has announced that all local authority kindergartens will be closed tomorrow and schools will operate partially until 11.45am.

In addition, the Israel Business Forum, which includes 200 of the economy’s top businessmen, announced that it will call an emergency meeting this evening and announce that the private sector will join the general strike tomorrow. It will also organize a demonstration in Tel Aviv this evening to demand a hostage deal.
