HP earnings in line with expectations, CEO says tariffs would hit the consumer

All eyes are on demand for AI PCs and the HP Inc. CEO’s tariffs. (HPQ) Enrique Lloris entering 2025.

With markets affected by tariffs, HP released mixed fiscal fourth-quarter sales results after the market closed.

Consumer PC sales declined 4% during the quarter, while commercial sales improved 5%. Operating margins in the PC division declined sharply year over year.

Similar to the previous quarter, business customers are upgrading their PCs ahead of Microsoft’s (MSFT) end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

Consumer PCs are under a bit of pressure as people wait for new versions of AI computers and spend more money on experiments.

Global shipments of traditional PCs in the third quarter of the calendar year were 68.8 million, down 2.4% year over year, According to IDC data. IDC explained that sales were affected by higher costs and inventory replenishment in the previous quarter.

“Demand for PCs has undoubtedly returned among consumers and business buyers,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research director at IDC. “However, much of the demand remains focused at the entry level thanks to the recovering economy and the back-to-school season in North America. However, newer AI-powered PCs like Qualcomm’s Copilot+ PCs along with equivalent Intel and AMD PCs are expected Chips as well as Apple’s M4-based Macs are expected to lead the segment in the coming months.

Where HP surprised positively for the first time in a while was its printing business.

Print sales rose 1% compared to the previous year, beating expectations. The upside could stem from struggles with rival Xerox (XRX), which is in the middle of a deep restructuring that professionals say is causing it to lose market share.

“In the printing space, results from peers like Xerox fell short of expectations, with Xerox printing equipment sales falling by double digits year-on-year due in part to increased competitive activity in some markets,” said Amit Daryanani, analyst at Evercore ISI, at a client. . Note.

Loris said HP is “gaining share” in the printing business, though she declined to call out Xerox and warned that the industry remains volatile.

“We believe that the overall printing market in 2025 will decline slightly,” Loris said. “The decline will be less than what we saw this year, but our goal is still to perform better than the market.”
