Israel spent $1.1b on nuclear weapons in 2023 – report

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons ranked Israel seventh in terms of investment in nuclear weapons last year.


The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons estimates that Israel spent about $1.1 billion on nuclear weapons in 2023. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

Israel ranks seventh in the world in terms of investment in nuclear weapons, just ahead of Pakistan, which spent an estimated $1 billion last year, and North Korea, which spent $900 million.

According to ICAN, Israel, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, India and North Korea spent a total of $91.4 billion on nuclear weapons in 2023. ICAN says the money invested in nuclear weapons last year could have saved 27%. One minute’s worth of money spent on nuclear weapons could have been used to plant a million trees.







ICAN was founded in Australia and is now headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
