Jo Sang has been reappointed as managing director of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), reinstating him in the role after he was acquitted of alleged corruption charges in December.

He takes over from Dr. Macharia Erongo, whose contract the board of directors has refused to renew, ending his three-year tenure at a state company.

Mr. Sang first returned to KPC as acting managing director in January after a Nairobi court acquitted him of corruption charges related to the Sh1.9 billion construction of the Kisumu oil terminal.

The re-appointment was then temporarily stayed by the Supreme Court following a case brought by the Law Society of Kenya.

“On behalf of the Kenya Pipelines Company Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jo Sang to the position of Managing Director after he emerged as President in the recruitment process that has just been completed,” KPC Chairperson FaithPoint said in a statement on Tuesday. .

“Mr. Sang’s contract will be for a new term of four years, subject to renewal depending on performance.”

Mr. Sang and other KPC senior managers were arrested on December 7, 2018, and charged with carrying out the Kisumu oil dock project, which cost taxpayers an alleged loss of Sh1.9 billion.

The court ruled that no money had been lost and that the project had been well planned.

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation is one of the largest and most important state-owned companies, building and maintaining infrastructure, including pipelines to supply the country with petroleum products.

But his tenure was cut short after he was forced to resign in December 2018 under what he described as enormous pressure from the then board of directors.

Mr. Sang holds an MBA from the University of Nairobi and a CPA(K) with extensive international training in energy governance and leadership, among other areas.

He has previously worked for National Oil, Unga Group, East African Breweries Plc and KPC.
