Knesset approves 2025 state budget

The state budget for 2025 obtained final approval by Knesateet Plenum. Despite the coalition conflicts, it was passed in the second and third readings with a large majority of 66 MKS in favor and 52 MKS against. This was exactly a week before the deadline set by the law to agree to the budget, which would have led to the dissolution of the Knesset and the new elections.

The budgets were held with the protests taking place near the building, as vehicle convoys tried to prevent access to the building, and six demonstrators were arrested. Amir OHana, President of Knesateet, opened the budget vote by inviting “the perpetrators to be brought to justice,” he said, who were appearing to release Hamas's hostages.

The state budget, which is approved for nearly three months in the fiscal year, includes a framework of about 620 billion NIS for government spending.

Compared to the budgets that were passed before October 7, 2023, spending was swollen by more than 100 billion NIS, especially in defensive spending, and is based on a relatively high financial deficit of 4.9 % of GDP, along with the heavier burden on citizens through a variety of taxes aimed at increasing the Ministry of Finance.

Arrests outside the Knesset

The biggest drama was already taking place outside the Knesset. Several police officers, along with Knesset goalkeeper members, acted against the demonstrators, and the accident quickly escalated with arrests with cars that prevent access to the building. OTZMA YEHUDIT MKS ALMOG COHEN and Amichai Eliyahu, the Minister of Heritage, entered the Knesset through the side entrances.

For the government, this is the fifth budget that has been approved since the beginning of its term in November 2022, amid the changes that the war and the evacuation of the population.

In addition, in contrast to the original budget proposal, the approved version today did not mention any mention of unnecessary government ministries or cutting the coalition funds.
