Last bank in Essex town to close in August

The last bank in the south Essex town is due to close in August.

Lloyds Banking Group has announced that it will close its Grover Walk, Corringham branch on August 21, leaving East Thurrock without a bank.

She said the rise of online banking meant fewer customers were using High Street branches.

The group had earlier announced the closure of 18 locations in Halifax and 22 Lloyd’s locations across the country between April and June.

According to Lloyds, transactions at the Corringham branch fell by 64% between 2017 and 2022.

The group said that 79% of its customers use other forms of banking services, including over the phone or the Internet, or have visited other branches.

Lloyds Bank said it was contacting customers to advise them of alternative local banking services.

This included the post office and local ATMs, as well as branches in nearby areas.

A Lloyds Bank spokesperson said: “Visits to our Corringham branch have declined over recent years, with many customers now choosing to bank digitally.

“When the branch closes in August, customers can continue to deal with us in person at our Basildon branch, or at the local post office on London Road.”

MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, Stephen MetcalfLloyds Director of Public Affairs for the East and South East and the local branch manager met on 18 April to discuss voter concerns.

“Lloyds Bank has assured me that it is doing everything it can to ensure its customers are well supported before closing its Corringham branch,” he said.

Lloyd’s said there would be no job losses as a result of the shutdown and its staff would be offered roles in other branches or other parts of the business.
