An ongoing self-reporting effort by interoperability giant LayerZero to combat Sybil attacks has uncovered more than 800,000 Sybil addresses.
According to LayerZero, the self-reporting process was carried out alongside rigorous analysis with risk management platform Chaos Labs and blockchain analytics firm Nansen.
After review, the platform announced that it had done so It has been identified 803,093 addresses as potential Sybils, which are users who create multiple fake accounts to claim more rewards through airdrops.
In early May, LayerZero revealed a sneak peek of an upcoming airdrop of the ZRO token, which was first announced in December 2023. Shortly after the airdrop teaser, Bryan Pellegrino, co-founder and CEO of LayerZero Labs, expressed his concerns Regarding the participation of company employees in the airdrop.
On May 7, Pellegrino announced on X that all LayerZero employees had been banned from participating in the airdrop, calling it a “shootable crime.”
Furthermore, after the May 1st snapshot, LayerZero began identifying Sybil actors. As part of the Sybil Hunting Initiative, LayerZero has implemented a self-reporting mechanism, allowing addresses suspected of Sybil behavior to come forward.
Each self-reported address is set to receive 15% of the intended token allocation, with the remaining 85% redistributed among eligible users. The goal of this strategic distribution was to incentivize honest reporting while protecting the ecosystem from exploitative behavior.
Initially, more than 2 million addresses were flagged as potential Sybils. However, more stringent criteria were applied to ensure accuracy and reduce false positives, improving the list to 803,093 addresses.
According to LayerZero, the results of this phase are preliminary, primarily to exclude large groups of titles from eligibility for prizes. The platform also indicated that the results are not final. He stated that as the methodology evolves, some titles may be re-evaluated and possibly removed from the Sybil list.
The next phase, dubbed Sybil Bounty Hunting, begins on May 18. At this point, LayerZero will invite the community to participate in identifying Sybil addresses, with a clear set of requirements: Bounty hunters must: a report At least 20 titles, supported by a transparent and robust methodology.
Successful reports will earn participants a reward of 10% of Sybil's intended token allocation, awarded exclusively to the first eligible tipper at each address.
The platform confirmed that the initial list from the self-reporting stage will not be subject to updates during the award search process, in order to ensure clarity and consistency for participants.
