French President Macron made a rare state visit to Germany today and the two leaders launched a Joint editorial A renewed call for integration into the European Union.
And this is her heart:
Germany and France are convinced that the EU needs more innovation, more single market, more investment, more equal opportunities and less bureaucracy.
They talk about an ambitious technology policy, but the past 20 years have shown that both countries lag far behind the United States, and it is not clear how they can join forces to move beyond that.
They also talk about lowering barriers in the single market, decarbonisation and “true integration” of financial markets. This could be done through harmonized corporate insolvency, tax law and investment products at the EU level. These are some good ideas, but I don't know if there is the political will to get them done in the EU.
