Mark Carney will head Liberal advisory task force

Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is getting involved in politics.

He has been rumored to remain in Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party circle for some time, and will now head a Liberal task force advising the government.

Trudeau will provide advice on how to “develop and shape ideas for the next phase of Canada’s near- and long-term economic growth and productivity strategy, building on the Liberal government’s work to strengthen the middle class and provide lower costs for families,” a party press release said.

The Liberals are very likely to be defeated in an election that must be called between now and October 20, 2025. That vote should be the end of Trudeau, and Carney is seeking to be the next Liberal leader.

The Liberals also face a byelection on September 16, which could increase pressure on Trudeau to step down sooner.

There was never any doubt that Carney would enter Canadian politics, as has long been rumored. I would bet on him winning the Liberal leadership after Trudeau, as the Canadian media adores him despite his poor record as central bank governor.
