TORONTO, Dec. 16, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — On December 14, federal Labor Minister Steve MacKinnon invoked Section 107 of the Canadian Labor Code, a gross violation of Canadian labor rights and democracy, and instructed the CIRB to dispatch the striking CUPW members. All over the country are returning to work.

In response, CUPW Toronto, CUPW Scarborough and the Toronto and York Region Labor Council have called a mass meeting on Monday, December 16 at 10 a.m. The rally will be held at 622 College Street, in front of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s office.

For more than a month, CUPW members tried to settle their dispute and negotiate a fair contract for all workers. However, in response to the government clearly demonstrating its willingness to intervene on behalf of the employer, Canada Post refused to negotiate fairly or in good faith. This follows a trend of the Liberal government intervening on the employer’s side, attacking workers’ rights and ensuring that employers will not bargain in good faith.

Now, facing looming unconstitutional mandates to return to work, CUPW members and workers stand up to the government that sold them out. We call on all workers concerned about the dramatic escalation in government intervention to join us in protest.
