Meta Soon to Bring Broadcasting Tool ‘Channels’ for WhatsApp

WhatsApp Channels will act as a one-way broadcast tool allowing admins to send photos, texts, videos, stickers and polls.

Facebook affiliate Meta (NASDAQ:FB) recently confirmed that it will soon be launching its own Channels broadcast feature for the most popular messaging service, WhatsApp.

Speaking about the development on Thursday, June 8, Meta said the new Channels feature is like a “private broadcast service” where individuals and organizations can send messages as well as updates to followers that differ from the types of personal communications that occur between WhatsApp users.

The channels will act as a one-way broadcast tool allowing admins to send photos, texts, videos, posters and polls. Additionally, the channels will come with a searchable directory where users can find their hobby, sports team, updates, and much more.

Also, channel admins will not be able to add followers to their channels. They can only store messages for 30 days before they are automatically deleted.

Another thing users need to note, WhatsApp said, is that the channels will not come with end-to-end encryption in order to “reach a wide audience.” However, the messaging platform added that it may bring end-to-end encrypted channels eventually in the future. But WhatsApp will keep this facility limited to nonprofits or health organizations that need to keep their communications secure.

WhatsApp will finally enable users to find the channels they want to join in a searchable directory. Users will be able to access the channels they follow through the new “Updates” tab. WhatsApp stated that the tab will be “separate from your conversations with family, friends, and communities.”

Meta to Debut Channels with different groups

WhatsApp stated that it is already working with various groups and non-profit organizations such as Colombia Check and the Singapore Heart Foundation to launch the channels for the first time. They are planning a wider launch in other parts of the world. in charge blog postWhatsApp note:

“To get the channels going, we’re excited to work with leading global voices and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore, where the channels will be available first, to build, learn from, and adapt the experience. We’ll be bringing channels to more countries and the possibility to create a channel for anyone over the coming months.”

Eventually, WhatsApp will allow everyone to create a WhatsApp channel. Other launch partners include the International Rescue Committee and the World Health Organization. Meta also said “There is an opportunity to support admins in a way that they can build a business around their channel using our expanded payment services as well as being able to promote specific channels in the directory to help raise awareness.”
