NASP Tells Congress and the Incoming Trump Administration: Pharmacies and Patients Can’t Continue to Wait for PBM Reform-Related Pharmacy Protections

As a non-profit trade organization representing specialty pharmacies that support patients with serious and complex diseases (cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, organ transplants, rare diseases, etc.) we are extremely frustrated and disappointed that the funding bill New Recently Passed Tonight does not include protections for pharmacies related to PBM reform. Failure to move forward on these needed reforms threatens pharmacies’ participation in Medicare Part D networks, limits patients’ access to the pharmacy of their choice, and continues to allow anticompetitive business practices that threaten the solvency of pharmacy companies across the United States.

“As the new Congress begins, it is imperative that pharmacy protections related to PBM reform pass into law without further delay,” said Sheila Arquette, President and CEO of NASP. President-elect Trump has stated that this is a political priority. We appreciate the hard work of many pharmacy champions in the House and Senate to advance these reforms. These must-pass provisions save taxpayers and the government money, and resulted after years of debate and deliberate bipartisan planning by 118 states.y Congress. The time to act is early in the new Congress session before any more pharmacies go out of business and are taken over – a direct result of abusive OPM practices that must be brought under control without further delay.
