National Skills Champions are Honoured at the Skills Canada National Competition 2024, in Québec

Nearly 6,000 students visited the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition at the Convention Center and saw competitors in action

QUEBEC CITY, June 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) today released the final medal results for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) 2024, in Quebec City. Over the past week, more than 500 students and trainees from across the country competed for the title of National Champion in more than 40 skill areas at the Center de foires d'ExpoCité. Nearly 250 medals were awarded to the top competitors in six skilled trade and technology sectors, including: transportation, construction, manufacturing, engineering, IT, services and employment. Competitors were evaluated against stringent industry standards and competed against the best in Canada.

During the SCNC conference, approximately 6,000 visiting students, industry leaders, government officials and industry celebrities attended to participate in on-site activities such as a skills showcase featuring First Nations, Inuit and Métis skills, a women's empowerment in the trades initiative and more than 50 attendees. Try-A-Trade® Activities and Technology. Among the celebrities is Cynthia Gauthier, a welder, professional monster truck racer, and a vocal advocate for women in the skilled trades.

SCNC's goal is to engage Canadian youth and promote all the rewarding and lucrative careers available to them in the skilled trades and technologies. It is the only national multi-commerce and technology event of its kind for students and young trainees in the country.

“The Canadian National Skills Competition allows us to engage with our country's future skilled workforce and inform them of the many opportunities that exist in skilled trades and technologies. Through interactive activities, they can discover their interests and the exciting careers available to them in these in-demand sectors.”

In addition, RBC Future Launch awarded successful participants from each province and territory a $1,500 RBC Best Region Prize in the national Skills Canada competition. The annual award honors these leaders as they continue their education and training in the skilled trades industry. According to an RBC report titled “Strengthening: Preparing Canada’s Skilled Trades for a Post-Pandemic Economy,” Canada will face a shortage of 10,000 skilled trade workers by 2026.
