New York working hours increase by 2.4% but productivity drops by 1.8%

A recent study by AI productivity platform Plus Docs, analyzing the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), shows a 2.4% increase in work hours in New York for 2022-23, accompanied by a 1.8% decrease in labor productivity.

Nationally, average hours worked increased 1.7 percent, and labor productivity saw a modest 1.0 percent increase. This puts New York above the national average in increasing hours worked, but in contrast to the overall trend of rising productivity.

“States with shorter working hours often emerge as the most productive due to several key factors: they prioritize efficiency, implement advanced technologies, and place an emphasis on employee well-being and work-life balance. In doing so, they maximize output without extending working hours and ensure their employees are adequately rested and highly motivated, leading to increased overall productivity,” commented Daniel Lee, CEO and co-founder of Plus Docs.

“The progressive labor policies and innovative work practices in these states contribute to an environment where productivity is determined by the quality of work, not the number of hours spent at work. This comprehensive approach not only enhances productivity, but also enhances employee satisfaction and well-being.”

Plus Docs’ findings suggest that New York’s approach could benefit from reassessment to become more in line with states that have successfully increased productivity without extending work hours, thus promoting a more balanced and efficient work environment.
