The Nuclear Energy and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has selected Justus Wabuiapo as its acting CEO, effective 1 July.
Mr. Waboyabo will take over from Collins Juma who will go on final leave from Friday after the end of his six non-renewable years at the helm of the agency.

The acting CEO takes office as NuPEA ramps up efforts to construct nuclear power plants to supplement the country’s growing energy needs.
“The Board of Directors of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency, in consultation with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, has appointed Mr. Justus Ambutsi Wabuyabo as Acting Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 July 2023,” NuPEA said in a statement.
Mr. Wabuyabo, a trained barrister and advocate for the Supreme Court of Kenya, joined NuPEA four years ago as Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs. He also held a similar position at the National Water and Harvest Authority.
Kenya is keen to build its first nuclear power plant in a bid to meet the expected increase in electricity demand as the country is on track to become a middle-income upper-income economy by 2030.

The current effective (grid connected) electricity capacity in Kenya is 2,600 MW with the supply source mainly from hydro, geothermal, wind and solar.
NuPEA believes that Kenya needs an additional 16,000 megawatts by 2030. Nuclear power is seen as a stable, efficient and reliable source of electricity to stimulate industrial development and stimulate economic growth.
