The fake $OPENAI token tweet remained active for about an hour.
Another story about hackers hacking famous personalities’ Twitter accounts to steal cryptocurrency has surfaced with the news that OpenAI’s CTO Mira Moratti’s account was hacked. An as yet unidentified entity managed to gain unauthorized access to her account.
The hacker used Mira’s Twitter account to promote a fake USD OPENAI Airdrop, claiming that the token was powered by AI-based language and would encourage decentralization and encourage more people to participate in the Ethereum blockchain.

The Twitter Hacker used a phishing link to a fake OpenAI website
The link in the tweet led to a website that looks exactly like the official OpenAI website, which makes it hard to tell the difference between them. The main problem that a very attentive person would notice was the claim to connect to a crypto wallet intended to be used for fraud.
In addition to the wallet used, there was a drain pool that would drain all the NFT and ERC-20 tokens that victims had in their wallets once they logged into the link. Cryptocurrency drainers are often used by scammers because they provide an automated and fast way to empty wallets of funds. They use this tool by first accessing victims’ private keys when they click on a phishing link.
The scammer made sure that comments were not allowed on the tweet, which would also have prevented many people who noticed the scam from notifying others faster. The tweet, which was viewed by nearly 80,000 people and garnered nearly 90 retweets, was removed within an hour. Although there have been some tweets from a few individuals about being hacked, there are no official reports that anyone fell into the trap.

The incident raises the alarm about more vigilant practices among crypto service providers and users in the industry.
Celebrity Twitter Hack: A Disturbing Trend in Crypto
This is not the first time that the accounts of prominent personalities on Twitter have been hacked. Last year, the Twitter accounts of several famous people and cryptocurrency exchanges were hacked and it was marked as one of the biggest Twitter hacks in history. The figures involved included Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, and exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase. These attacks were also carried out using fake links.
Other than the few cases we have mentioned here, malicious actors have gone to great lengths to steal crypto funds. Cryptography has been a prime target for many cyberattacks due to its nature. Since crypto technology is still in its infancy, much needs to be done to protect and regulate the market. Until appropriate regulatory measures are generally accepted, it may remain a haven for criminals.
