Opposition MKs boycott c’ttee discussions on Levin-Sa’ar plan

This morning, the Knesset Constitution, Law and Judiciary Committee approved the reopening of discussions on the plan to change the composition of the Judge Selection Committee. Opposition Knesset members boycotted the meeting.

MK Simcha Rothman, Chairman of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Judiciary Committee, immediately put to vote, without any discussion, a proposal to return the bill from its introduction in the Knesset to committee discussions, in order to amend the bill in accordance with the plan proposed last week by Justice Minister Yariv Levin. And Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. Three members of the Knesset from the coalition voted in favor of the resolution, without any opposing votes.

Yesh Atid MK Yoav Segalovich, a member of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, who boycotted the meeting, said: “This is a fraudulent way to restore judicial reform, as if it were unanimous. We just have to remember that Gideon Wa Sa’ar is a minister in the government to which he belongs.” Yariv Levin, and we will not tolerate fraudulent practices.”

The leaders of the opposition factions announced that “since this is a discussion about the agreements that the coalition reached within itself, we see no point in the opposition’s presence in a discussion that removes the law from the agenda of the plenary session and returns it to the committee.” The opposition will come later to the discussions that will address the substance of the law and not the procedures.”

At the end of March 2023, the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee approved, in the second and third readings, a draft law changing the composition of the Judicial Selection Committee, so that it would be under the control of the coalition and appoint 11 members. The draft law includes an amendment to the basic law: the Judicial Authority and Courts Law. The bill was put on the Knesset table but has not yet been put to a vote in the plenary session, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu halted the move in the wake of the massive protests that erupted after the dismissal of then-Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

Now, in the wake of the plan presented by Levin and Saar, MK Rothman is promoting a proposal to change the bill according to the new scheme. Levine aims to pass the legislation by the end of February.
