Protests escalate after ‘reasonableness’ law approved

Israeli protesters took to the streets across the country after the Knesset this afternoon approved the second and third readings of a law that removes the reasonable standard of judicial review of decisions by elected officials and the government.

The largest demonstrations were in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Thousands of people who were demonstrating around the Knesset this afternoon marched angrily down nearby Begin Street, blocking the main highway. The police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators and clear the road.

In Tel Aviv, Kaplan Street is closed in both directions from Ibn Gbriol Street to Menachem Begin Street as well as the Hashalom Bridge and entry roads into Ayalon at the Hashalom Junction. The police removed the demonstrators who were blocking the roads and arrested them by force. A number of demonstrators were arrested while trying to block the Ayalon highway.

Among those who took part in the demonstrations in Jerusalem in Sacher Park, below the Knesset, was the head of the Israel Bar Association, a lawyer. Amit Bashar and former Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman.

Three protesters were injured after being run over by a pickup truck on Route 531 near Ra, Anana.
