Rail unions considering ‘updated’ offer from train firms but ‘no decision’ taken yet as more disruption looms

Leaders of the country’s largest railway workers’ union are considering an “updated” offer from the train companies aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over jobs, wages and terms.

The move by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) follows weeks of talks in a bid to break the deadlock.

The Rail and Maritime Transport (RMT) union staged a series of strikes extending into last summer causing disruption to passenger travel across the country.

A spokesperson for RMT said: “We have received an updated offer from RDG and our National Executive Committee is examining its contents.

“No decision has been made on any next steps.”

A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group said: “Following further joint constructive discussions with RMT leadership, we have submitted a revised Fair Offer providing important clarifications and reassurances, particularly in relation to the terms and conditions of employment for our staff.

Our ambition remains to secure long-term rewarding jobs for our people, better service for passengers and a railway that takes no more than its fair share from the taxpayers.

“We hope the RMT chief executive will bring this proposal to his full membership of the train operating company and allow them to have their say in the deal, so that we can end this dispute and work together to deliver a strong future for Britain’s railways and all who work on it.”
