Shekel weakens following Haniyeh, Shukr killings

The shekel has weakened significantly this morning, following the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut last night, and the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in the early hours of this morning, about which Israel has remained silent. The assassination of Fuad Shukr was in response to the killing of 12 children in the town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, which was hit by a Hezbollah rocket fired from Lebanon. There are fears that these incidents could lead to an exchange of fire between the IDF and Hezbollah across Israel’s northern border escalating into a full-scale war.

The shekel exchange rate against the US dollar is currently 1.22% higher than yesterday’s representative rate, at NIS 3.7788/USD, and the shekel exchange rate against the euro is 1.1% higher, at NIS 4.0878/EUR.

The main indices on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange are fairly stable, with the Tel Aviv 35 currently down 0.28%, closing at 1,999.55 points.

Oil prices have been rising since Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran, as Iran is one of the world’s largest oil producers, and energy stocks in Tel Aviv are also rising sharply. Doral Energy shares are up 6.56%, OPC Energy shares are up 8.30%, and Energean shares are up 2.20%.
