Arab media reported that 2,750 Hezbollah members were seriously injured and at least eight people were killed after their pagers exploded, according to Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad. The explosions occurred in the southern suburbs of Beirut and in dozens of other locations across the country. Iranian media reported that the injured included the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani.
The Lebanese NBN channel attributed the explosions to Israel, claiming that it had succeeded in sabotaging Hezbollah’s communications network through high-level technology. Hezbollah held Israel responsible for the explosions and said it would be punished. This is the first major event in Beirut since the assassination of Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr on July 30.
Following reports of the explosions, the Tel Aviv 35 index, which was down about 0.40% today, fell sharply and is now down 1.08% at 1,997.31 points. The representative shekel was almost unchanged today, but the Israeli currency is now weakening sharply. The shekel rose 1.14% against the dollar to NIS 3.788/USD, and the shekel rose 0.97% against the euro to NIS 4.210/EUR.
