(Reuters) — Twitter has refused to pay Google (NASDAQ:) cloud bills as its contract renewal is due this month, potentially crippling the social media company’s trust and safety teams, Platformer reported Saturday.

The report stated that before Elon Musk’s takeover of the social media platform last year, Twitter signed a multi-year contract with Google related to fighting spam and protecting accounts, among other things.

The Platformer report didn’t provide details on how conflict between the companies could hamper Twitter’s trust and safety teams. The information said that Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March.

The Platformer said that Twitter hosts some of the services on its server and includes others on the cloud platforms of Amazon (NASDAQ:) and Google.

In March, Amazon warned Twitter that it would withhold ad payments because of the company’s outstanding invoices for Amazon Web Services for cloud computing services, according to The Information.

Since the Musk acquisition, Twitter has cut costs dramatically and laid off thousands of employees. Musk had ordered the company to cut infrastructure costs, such as spending on cloud services, by $1 billion, a source told Reuters in November.

Twitter did not immediately respond to an emailed inquiry while Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
