U.S. dollar

The US dollar, (symbol $, symbol USD) is the paper currency of the United States of America (USD) and the most traded currency globally. It was introduced to the United States in the late eighteenth century, with banknotes not being distributed until the next century. The US dollar, also known informally as the greenback, is the world’s premier reserve currency, in large part due to the importance of the US economy on the world stage. The US dollar is now backed by gold (in the 20th century)

Read this term UBS’s view through equity analysts, saying they’d rather look for growth abroad to fund equity valuations, with less US dollars contributing to it, than pursue chasing narrow-band leaders:

  • “…instead of going after the technology trade of the big seven names that really carried the market…we look for our growth abroad versus domestic growth”

The outlook for the US economy from UBS is a little murky:

  • He acknowledged that the bank was expecting a recession in the first half of 2023
  • He said he believes the economy has shown resilience
  • You expect a recession either in the fourth quarter of 2023 to the first half of 2024, or even no recession
