Speaking before a visit to Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the advanced THAAD anti-missile system “is present” in Israel.

The US anti-missile defense system (THAAD) has been fully deployed in Israel. Speaking before a visit to Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the advanced THAAD anti-missile system “is present” in Israel.

The system, which was sent to Israel earlier this month, has now been fully deployed in the country. The THAAD battery will be operated by a team of approximately 100 US Army soldiers in Israel, as required and in full cooperation with the Israeli air defense system. Austin refused to say whether the system was fully operational, but stressed, “We have the ability to operate it very quickly and we are keeping pace with our expectations.”

The THAAD battery consists of six truck-mounted launchers, 48 interceptor missiles, radio and radar equipment, and requires approximately 100 soldiers to operate. The battery was sent to help protect Israel in the event of Iranian retaliation.
