We have talked a lot about the purpose, and while it should be at the heart of your organization, it has long been discussed. What should come first – a clear purpose or “right people”? It is “chicken or eggs?” The equivalent of business.
Wait – here comes the bus!
Jim Collins's famous concept of “obtaining the right people in the bus”, which was presented in his good book to the wonderful, supports obtaining the right people around the table (or in the bus) before discussing the purpose, goals or strategy of your work.
My question is this, can you even attract “right people” if you don't know where your bus is going, or if you are not sure of the type of bus you are leading?
I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. If you do not know in the end the reason for your organization, you will struggle to determine or attract the “correct” type of employees. However, the right employees can be necessary to help you improve the size, shape and destination of your bus.
Well, who is looking for “?
Well, it changes depending on your goal and what you are trying to achieve – it is not a single size that suits everyone (yes, we will talk about diversity soon!). For example, if you look forward to being disrupted in this field, you may need to employ people who have little “gravity” – people are not afraid to challenge the base. If your work depends on sales, you will need smart people from good communication … you will get a core.
What we are talking about here is less than the basic skills that people possess, and more about the values, position and behaviors they bring to work. Although this may feel at first glance, or difficult to express, determining the values of your organization and behaviors that you expect to be seen from your team will become increasingly important as your business grows.
Is my team on the bus?
So, what if you are a company with a current team? How do you know who can help you push your work forward? Well, the answer is still standing – everything starts with values and behaviors.
Many organizations have values that you use to market and a little more. But values can only live if they are supported by employee behavior to simulate them, and this must be led from above.
Without this framework, the individual of your “kind of people” can without expressing what it means, it can make you in all kinds of inconvenience.
I told you that we are talking about diversity
The team's diversity becomes very important for any organization that honestly committed to doing something different. I am not only talking about male/female division, as I am talking about the diversity of the population composition, backgrounds, skills and mentality.
Often, blame is blamed for the differences between individuals in creating friction within the difference. But the difference is not the cause of the problem. The lack of purpose, values and behaviors is often clear.
Today's workplace is an intersection between multiple generations and various backgrounds, each with strengths, challenges and ways to do things. When people work successfully together, they not only learn from each other – they activate each other, make new ideas and help attract new talents to the organization, thus creating a more dynamic and innovative workforce.
Getting this dynamic right does not occur by chance. It is the result of a clear leadership – a person who is ready to put it in the time, energy and effort it requires to raise a coherent and enabled team from the people who are in line with your values, and the right behaviors appear and have a real passion for your purpose. It comes to setting a clear framework for those looking for and obtaining it “in the bus” from the beginning.
Tell me again, why is it very important
To borrow line from a famous shampoo brand … because it is worth it.
- The right people are leading the purpose
The best people, who are in line with the values of your company, will bring passion and ability to adapt and experience to help your company develop with its growth. - Cultural suitability is the key
The appropriate team will naturally contribute to building and developing the type of culture that supports your company's goal. This, in turn, helps to maintain the motives of this team, commit and fulfill. - Flexibility on rigid plans
The best flexible and creative people are able to control strategies with the shift of commercial landscapes. Instead of adhering to a rigid plan, the right team will enable you to constantly improve your direction and stay able to compete.
The bottom line
Successful works were built on a strong culture founded in meaningful and durable communications. As a leader, it extends to the challenge of uniting your team and celebrating the differences to create a cooperative environment, which enables everyone to prosper.
When you focus on getting the right people on the bus, you can set the way for success, not only in terms of strategy and purpose but also in creating a company that appreciates cooperation and the ability to adapt and mutual respect.
Therefore, let's make sure that your team involves and enthusiastically for your organization's trip. The flight line may be flexible, but the proposed destination should be in the list of wishes for everyone!
