XTX Markets Sponsors Oxford Scholarship, Ukraine’s Math Olympiad Team

XTX Markets, a global algorithmic trading company, has continued its philanthropic support of math education. The eMarket Mark is the title sponsor of the Mariman Mirzakhani Scholarship at the University of Oxford and the Ukrainian International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2023 and 2024 team.

While XTX is supporting the grant with a “gift of £2.48 million”, the company has not disclosed the financial value of its sponsorship of the Ukrainian IMO team. “The Maryam Mirzakhani Scholarship aims to address the disproportionately low levels of representation of women applying for and completing postgraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines,” Oxford’s Institute of Mathematics said in a statement.

XTX Markets, which recently promoted Dr. Hans Buehler as co-CEO, has announced that Marta Buca, the first recipient of the Maryam Mirzahani Scholarship, will join Oxford University Mathematics in October as a postgraduate student.

Before her death in 2017, Mirzahani was honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics for mathematicians under the age of 40. She is the first Iranian and so far only two women to receive the award.

The institute also said: “The endowment by XTX Markets has led to further donations, and together they have awarded fully funded scholarships to female students of any nationality to complete a standard four-year DPhil in Mathematics at the Oxford Mathematical Institute.”

XTX supports the IMO team in Ukraine

On the other hand, XTX indicated in a recent statement that it is supporting the Ukrainian IMO team to address specific areas of needs.

XTX explained, “XTX will support the Ukrainian IMO team by funding training, training camps and competitions over the next two years, as well as providing scholarships for six students to complete their A-levels in the UK.”

Meanwhile, in June last year, XTX launched the Academic Havens Fund, a £15m fund to support students and researchers forced to flee their homes due to the war in Ukraine. Over the past year, the online marketplace has launched £10.1m to fund various academic haven projects.

The company also supports the University of Oxford Postgraduate Scholarships for Ukraine with a grant of £602,550 from the Fund.
