Canadian train workers back on the job as the government orders binding arbitration

7

Canadian railway workers return to work after short-term shutdown at national railway.

CN workers have removed picket lines while CP workers are still waiting for the official order but that should come soon.

Labor Secretary Stephen McKinnon ordered the move:

“These collective bargaining negotiations belong to Canadian National Railway, Canadian Railways and Canadian Railways alone — but their effects, and the effects of the current impasse, are borne by all Canadians,” MacKinnon said.

“As Minister of Labour, it is my assessment that the parties have reached a fundamental impasse. It is therefore my duty and responsibility to use my powers under the Canada Labour Act to ensure industrial peace and provide short- and long-term solutions that serve the national interest.”
