Cardano To Launch First Permissionless L2, Outpacing Ethereum

2

Cardano is set to unveil its first permissionless Layer 2 (L2) solution, putting itself ahead of other blockchains like Ethereum. The announcement was made during the Cardano Summit 2024 in Argentina, where Felipe DiSarro, CEO and founder of Anastasia Labs, detailed the upcoming launch of Midgard, an optimistic cluster designed to enhance scalability and functionality of ADA.

Desaro Highlight Unique Developments for Midgard via He stressed that current L2 solutions mostly rely on multi-custody signature schemes, which introduce central elements into a decentralized blockchain environment.

Midgard sets itself apart by inheriting the complete security of Cardano’s Layer 1 (L1) through several innovative features. In contrast to Ethereum’s L2 like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, Midgard operates without a central serializer, challenge-response proofs, multi-signatures, or custodians. Instead, they use an impermissible set of operators, unreliable fraud guides, and unreliable deposits and withdrawals, ensuring that incoming and outgoing mail mechanisms remain completely censorship-resistant.

Via X, DiSarro highlighted Cardano’s unique native architecture for unspent transaction outputs (EUTxO). “All of this was made possible by Cardano’s unique native EUTxO architecture. UTxO contention, small block size, local state, transaction determinism – all of these ‘issues’ may have led you to question why these design choices were made. Midgard aims to show you that These aren’t actually problems at all.

As the Anastasia Labs founder argued: “In fact, quite the opposite; These are extremely powerful characteristics that together provide unique value that simply does not exist in any other ecosystem. These are actually the fundamental pillars that make Midgard possible in the first place, DiSarro explained.

The Midgard architecture allegedly leverages the inherent strengths of ADA’s design, making it impossible to replicate on other blockchain platforms such as Ethereum, Solana, or Sui. “You can’t build Midgard on Ethereum, Solana, or Sui. It’s a protocol that’s only possible on Cardano,” DiSarro emphasized.

The imminent launch of Midgard is expected over the next few months, with DiSarro confidently predicting its impact: “True clustering and L2 protocols that inherit the full security of L1 will come in the next few months. Our optimistic cluster, Midgard, is the first of its kind to be permissionless.”

This announcement received attention from within and outside the ADA community. Danogo, which runs the first decentralized exchange (DEX) for trading Optim Bond tokens on Cardano, pointed to a presentation DiSarro gave at the Cardano Summit: “Only on Cardano can you have a new generation of permissionless Rollup! No multiple tokens controlling In the second layer as in Ethereum! Even Vitalik realizes this now (…) This inherits full security from L1 and Cardano will have its first completely permissionless L2 level in a few months!!!”

At press time, ADA was trading at $0.343.
