David Beckham lands $36m payday as Netflix documentary boosts brand empire

David Beckham’s business empire has generated a whopping $36 million in revenue, thanks to rising profits at DRJB Holdings, the company behind his global licensing deals.

Newly released financial statements reveal that the former England footballer has earned earnings of $12.8 million for 2023, followed by another $23 million this year, underscoring the continuing appeal of the Beckham brand after a decade of hanging up his boots.

In the year to December 2023, DRJB more than doubled its pre-tax profits, rising from $16.2 million to $36.2 million. The company, whose name is derived from Beckham’s full name, David Robert Joseph Beckham, generates income from a wide range of endorsements and licensing agreements that feature Beckham’s name and image on everything from clothing to consumer goods. The brand’s reach expanded further thanks to the hit Netflix series documenting the lives of David and his wife Victoria – a fashion entrepreneur and former Spice Girl – first broadcast in October 2023.

Produced by The Studio 99 group, which is owned by DRJB, the four-part show was an instant hit, ranking in the top 10 on Netflix in all 90 countries in which it tracks viewership. In its recently published accounts, DRJB credits the documentary with a boost in profits, along with a steady stream of brand partnerships. In addition to recent deals with Boss Fragrances, Tempur, Coty, EA Sports, Nespresso and Uber Eats, Beckham has picked up new endorsements, including collaborations with Chinese online retailer AliExpress and SharkNinja, known for its air fryers and home appliances.

Beckham, now 49, transferred majority control of DRJB to US-based Authentic Brands Group last year, in exchange for $269 million in shares and cash. Although Al Baraka Banking Group has taken a 55 percent stake in DRJB, Beckham retains a 45 percent stake and benefits from the continued growth of his name and image rights. Al Baraka Banking Group itself owns the licensing rights to a host of global icons, including basketball star Shaquille O’Neal and golfer Greg Norman, as well as the intellectual property of Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali.

Despite the windfall from his brand business, Beckham’s wife Victoria has managed to achieve more modest financial fortunes through her own fashion and beauty ventures, which recorded losses in 2023. However, the couple’s total wealth is estimated at £455 million. , thanks in part to David’s continued success off the field. Combined with his stake in Major League Soccer club Inter Miami – which was secured as part of his playing contract with LA Galaxy – Beckham has a social media following of 163 million across Instagram, Facebook and major Chinese platforms.

While critics have sometimes warned of overexposure, DRJB filings indicate that the popularity of the Beckham brand remains strong. The company’s administrative costs have been significantly reduced under the supervision of Al Baraka Banking Group, enabling it to finance large payments to shareholders and enhance its orientation towards new product categories.
