CALGARY, Alberta, Dec. 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Direct Energy Regulators Services has announced default natural gas prices for January 2025. These prices will apply to customers who do not currently have a competitive supplier within ATCO Gas North and South service. regions. The method DERS uses to calculate rates has been verified and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.

Northern service area

The North Region includes customers living in and north of Red Deer.

  • For customers in the ATCO Gas North service area, the January regulated natural gas price decreases from the December price of $2,123 per gigajoule to $1,986 per gigajoule.
  • This rate reflects the market price for January supplies of approximately US$1.848 per gigajoule, as reported on NGX, and includes an adjustment of US$0.138 per gigajoule for December and prior months.
  • A typical residential gas bill for January, based on an average of 20 gigajoules of consumption, is north of $255.

Southern service area

The South Zone includes customers who live south of Red Deer.

  • For customers in the ATCO Gas South service area, the January regulated natural gas price decreases from the December price of $2,123 per gigajoule to $1,986 per gigajoule.
  • This rate reflects the market price for January supplies of approximately US$1.848 per gigajoule, as reported on NGX, and includes an adjustment of US$0.138 per gigajoule for December and prior months.
  • A typical residential gas bill for January, based on an average of 20 gigajoules of consumption, is about $228 in the South.

Typical bill amounts may vary between ATCO North and South regions due to differences in Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP) fees charged by ATCO Gas.

In January 2025, the default electricity option, currently called the Regulated Rate Option (RRO), will change to the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR). Please note that RoLR only refers to regulated electricity prices and the change will not affect natural gas prices.
