(Reuters) – More than 250,000 homes and businesses in Louisiana were without power on Thursday after Hurricane Francine hit the state’s Gulf Coast, according to data from the website PowerOutage.us.
Hurricane Francine weakened to a post-tropical cyclone earlier today, but not before battering southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and Alabama with heavy rains and gusty winds.
The utility company with the largest number of affected customers was Entergy (NYSE:), which had 209,288 customers without power.
“We have begun restoring service to our customers where it is safe to do so and are assessing the damage to our system caused by Francine,” Entergy said in a statement Thursday.
Dixie Electric followed suit, cutting service to 19,360 customers in the state.
