Ng, a self-proclaimed Web 3 advocate, suggested that Bitcoin “deserves consideration” as a financial reserve for nations and regions. He pointed to Bitcoin’s growing global acceptance as “digital gold.”

The lawmaker also urged Hong Kong lawmakers to accelerate the development of the Web 3 industry locally by attracting more crypto companies and talent to the city.

Ng concluded his post on X by saying that he will discuss the possibility of including Bitcoin in the city’s financial reserves with various stakeholders and will keep the public informed.

Elected in 2021, Ng is a member of the Legislative Council representing the newly created Election Commission constituency in Hong Kong.

At the Bitcoin 2024 conference on Saturday, former President Trump promised that if elected in November, he would create a “national strategic reserve of bitcoin.” U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis then took the stage, following Trump, to unveil new proposed legislation outlining a plan for the said bitcoin reserve.
